NEIKER (https://neiker.eus/en/) is focused on applied innovation in agriculture, forestry, livestock, and the environment to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the primary sector. 

NEIKER is an entity dependent on Economic Development, Sustainability, and the Environment Ministry of the Basque Government and it is part of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA). 

In direct relation to food waste, NEIKER participated (together with partners led by ELIKA) in a study to quantify food waste throughout the Basque Country’s agri-food system, applying the guidelines provided by the European Commission. This study – published in 2022- was developed at the request of the Basque Government, and NEIKER contributed, above all, to the diagnosis of primary production (agricultural and livestock sector). 

  • On-going activities related to Food Loss: 

NEIKER is currently participating in the working group that will continue to quantify food losses (FL) in the Basque Country’s food supply chain, with the aim of updating and improving the assessment conducted in 2022. 

The ultimate goal is to determine the economic, social, and environmental impact of food waste, as well as the opportunities for its prevention and reduction. 

In this context, we are reviewing the definitions and quantification methods of FL for the first stages of food production and proposing improvements for the quantification of some categories in the Basque Country. 

  • Drivers for participating in the FOLOU TWRP 

We are interested in enhancing our knowledge about definitions and quantification methodology for Food Losses (FL) for the first stages of food production. 

We would like the improvement and alignment of the Basque Country’s quantification methodology with that of the EU, at least for the food categories considered relevant in our region.
